Disruption in Formula Racing
Since two years Formula 1 have been using a hybrid engine, in order to adapt to the need for car manufacturers to improve on their performance with electric cars. They have to move towards more hybrid and full electric cars on the road. In the next years, big manufacturers like Renault and Mercedes will present a whole range of electric powered cars. So in order for them to be challenged in F1 on a technical level, this new power unit was selected. But, there is already Formula E!
Big brands on the move
This year several big car manufacturers announced that they will join the new Formula E season. Currently big car brands Audi, BMW, Renault, Jaguar, DS (Citroen) are active in this championship. Soon the whole Formula E grid is completely filled with cars developed by global, large volumes car manufacturers. Even Mercedes Benz has made a tough decision to stop their DTM participation. A big shock, because they are considered the founders of this series. And the reason for this? They will join the Formula e grid.
Audi already stopped end of 2016 their LMP1 (endurance) entry, in favor of the Formula E. And also here a shock went through the paddock, as they are the champions of many of the last seasons. These changes show a clear move towards the new way of racing, using electric powered cars. They need to show the world that they are able to develop hi-tech electric power units, as this brand awareness will support the sales of their road vehicles.
F1 back to Non Electric Power?
Currently the Formula 1 teams and manufacturers are considering the new engine rules for the upcoming years. And obviously they are looking towards the Formula e series. And not only for the regulations regarding engines, but also for a new way of event management and fan engagement. The new owner of Formula 1 (commercial), has made it clear that something has to change in the entertainment and engagement of the sport. Social media use, the use of 'power boosts' voted by fans, and a more accessible paddock and grid for fans are new developments they can't ignore. So in order to deviate from the Formula E series, they have to make a clear statement. And considering the current rumors, they want to back to the days of 'fast, loud and beautiful cars'.
These are exiting times for any racing fan, as changes are coming. And the disruption in this sport, will only improve the entertainment and engagement of fans.
