KARTING ON THE LONGEST TRACK OF EUROPE
On the Spanish Island Lanzarote, Just outside of Peurto del Carmen, the Lanzarote international karting track lays. In the middle of the volcano landscape a 2,3 kilometer track offers pro's and amateurs an exciting drive. For 18 Euro you can drive a 200 cc kart. In 8 minutes you get to drive about 7 laps depending on how quick you are. The day I went over it was a sunny day and the track was quiet. Only a small group was attending a grand prix simulation. While watching them, I noticed that the quickest one did a lap of 73 sec. But his cornering wasn't that great, he didn't break before the two 180 degrees corners, and ended up spinning or drifting to get the corner. During my visit I spoke one of the marshals and he told me the every year the Canary championship takes place on the track and a year ago the World Championship had a round on the track. Also during winter time Max Verstappen came over and spend time on the track he told me. With the nice weather on Lanzarote, also during winter time it's the perfect destination for pro's to go karting and have a training.
Finally I got to drive on the track. There is a long straight followed by two quick corners, and after two rounds I could go flat out with confidence. Then a combination of 180 degrees corners, followed by a quick S corner and two medium speed corners before the straight again. My first lap time was 73 seconds, and I gradually improved my driving and cornering. With only 7 laps to go, I had to learn the track quickly. After finding my limit on the track, and making sure I put my weight on the outside tires and brake as little as possible I went in the 72 seconds lap time. The track with it's 2,3 km, really has a nice flow of corners and a high speed straight. After pushing each lap, I was called in the pits after 7 laps. I was curious what my best lap time was. I got my sheet and it showed a 71,93 seconds as a best lap. The mechanic told me that the best time of the month was a 70,9 seconds. So I was glad to be just one second of the best lap time. And considering my height and weight he was even quite impressed with my lap time after only 7 laps. Still with adrenaline I left the track with a smile on my face. Another track visited with a nice lap time to take home with me.
